The Painted Hall is seen as one of the most important pieces of baroque interiors in Europe. Originally conceived and executed by British artist Sir James Thornhill, the designs are almost 300 years old. The designs and paintings themselves tell a story of political change through 200 intricately detailed figures.
Now after a 2-year restoration project, the Painted Hall has re-opened for visitors to experience the 17th century interiors. Described by some as the ‘Sistine Chapel’ of the UK, this is one of the best piece of British architecture.
The Painted Hall also has many accessible exhibits that allow you understand how the hall was created including its recent restoration. You also get the chance to get hands-on with treasure chests filled with brilliant touch objects that are inspired by the hall itself. You may even get the chance to try on King William’s crown!
