20 stops around York
Buses arrive and depart up to every 10 minutes, so you won’t be waiting long for the next leg of your journey as you make your way round the fascinating historic city of York.
You can stay on the bus for the full hour for a whistle-stop tour of all the city’s highlights, or hop off at any of the 20 stops if you want to explore an area further.
York caters for all tastes and interests, whether you’re looking for historic landmarks, beautiful architecture, great shopping or some relaxation.
The city centre
You can join the tour anywhere, but the best place to begin is Exhibition Square next to the famous York Minster, northern Europe’s largest Gothic cathedral and home of some fabulous stained glass windows.
If you have a head for heights, tackle the 275 steps up to the top of the Minster’s Central Tower and enjoy spectacular open air views of the whole city and the countryside beyond.
Clifford’s Tower
If one spectacular city viewpoint just isn’t enough, hop back on the bus and head to Clifford’s Tower, the hilltop remains of the 11th century castle built by William the Conqueror. Once you’ve taken in the panoramic views, head to the York Dungeon for a theatrical way to discover the more gruesome aspects of the city’s past, brought to life with a series of 11 shows and a group of live actors.
Shopping
Back in the city centre, stop for refreshments at one of the many cafes and restaurants lining the warren of cobbled mediaval streets, before enjoying some retail therapy among the big names and independent labels on the city’s shopping streets.
The River Ouse
The beautiful River Ouse runs through the city, and a river cruise is a great way to see the sights if you’re looking for some gentle relaxation, while the city also hosts some award-winning museums and galleries for visitors seeking some culture – the National Railway Museum, York Art Gallery and Jorvik Viking Centre are must-sees!
