Caerleon
After joining the tour in central Cardiff, you’ll head east out of the city past the neighbouring town of Newport to the historic village of Caerleon. Known as the location of a Roman fortress and settlement including a grand amphitheatre where gladiators fought to the death nearly 2,000 years ago, the town is a must-see for fans of history and Roman culture. More artefacts from this fascinating period in history are on display at the National Roman Legion Museum, which also maintains a garden based on the style favoured by the Romans.
Caerwent
Once you’re back on the tour bus, the journey further east to Caerwent takes around 20 minutes, and your guide will explain the history of this thriving market town from its founding in Roman times through to the present day.
Tintern Abbey
Another 20 minute journey, this time heading north, brings tour guests to the fabulous architecture and beautiful surroundings of Tintern Abbey, on the banks of the River Wye. The ruins of the abbey – the first Cistercian foundation in Wales and the inspiration for a poem by William Wordsworth – are popular with visitors, attracted by the history of the site and wonderfully preserved details of the 12th century building.
Raglan Castle
Before returning to Cardiff, there’s just enough time to visit Raglan Castle, dating from the late medieval period. Like Tintern Abbey, the castle is a popular tourist attraction, and is set in wonderful countryside just a few miles east of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
